The Number Nine?

In The House on Mango Street, Esperanza said that she hated her name. This was a reoccuring trend in the novel; however, a list of descriptions caught my eye.

When describing her name, she compares it to sadness and waiting, which makes sense. But, then she uses several metaphors that could yield several ideas and reactions.

Why does Esperanza compare her name to the number nine? What is  wrong with the number nine?

And what is wrong with a muddy color? Are all people supposed to like bright vibrant color?
